Exploring Art and Community: A Creative Day at Campbelltown Arts Centre

At El Pinoy Care Services, we believe that community participation is about more than just outings—it’s about connection, creativity, and enriching experiences. Our latest community event took us to the Campbelltown Arts Centre (CAC), a vibrant cultural hub that celebrates diverse artistic voices and offers engaging activities for all.

Our participants had the incredible opportunity to explore the latest exhibition by Marikit Santiago, a renowned Filipino-Australian artist known for integrating her family into her work. One of her standout pieces, "Hallowed Be Thy Name," is a self-portrait featuring her three children, who actively contributed to the artwork. The painting depicts Santiago and her children adorned in traditional Filipino attire, surrounded by lush foliage. Each child holds a native Australian animal, which also serves as a biblical symbol of sin, reflecting the complex interplay between cultural identity and personal beliefs. This deeply personal and collaborative approach invites viewers to reflect on their own identities and familial bonds, making the artwork both intimate and universally relatable.

After exploring the exhibition, we took part in "Alter Altar," an interactive art activity designed to mirror Santiago’s self-portrait. This workshop encouraged our participants to reflect on how they see themselves and express their identities through creative altar-making. Much like Santiago's integration of her family into her art, participants were invited to construct personal altars using various materials, fostering self-expression and storytelling. By engaging in this activity, our participants not only connected with Santiago's artistic process but also embarked on their own journeys of self-exploration and creative expression. This experience underscored the power of art to inspire introspection and celebrate the diverse identities within our community.

Art wasn’t the only highlight of the day! We enjoyed a relaxing lunch in CAC’s Sculpture Garden, surrounded by striking outdoor artworks and lush greenery. To complete our visit, we spent time by the Japanese Garden’s koi fish pond, a peaceful retreat where participants could unwind, reflect, and simply enjoy the moment.
