Understanding the New Support at Home Program
The Australian Government’s Support at Home Program, launching on 1 July 2025, is designed to simplify and improve in-home aged care services. To help older Australians and their families navigate these changes, the Support at Home Program Handbook provides essential information about how the new system will work.
The Support at Home Program will replace the current Home Care Packages (HCP) Program and Short-Term Restorative Care (STRC) Programme. The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) will also transition into the new program, but no earlier than 1 July 2027.
This reform aims to create a single, streamlined aged care system that is more flexible, transparent, and responsive to individual needs.
Key Features of the Support at Home Program
According to the handbook, here’s what you need to know:
Tailored Support Plans – A new assessment process will ensure services match individual care needs.
Greater Flexibility – Older Australians can receive a mix of services, including personal care, home modifications, assistive technology, and nursing support.
Fair & Transparent Funding – A new funding model will be introduced, ensuring that resources are distributed equitably based on individual needs.
Improved Service Coordination – Providers will work collaboratively to deliver better-integrated care.
Gradual Transition – Current care recipients will continue receiving support while transitioning into the new system over time.
